This month Coatings World interviewed a number of key suppliers of performance enhancing additives. These include: Avinash Bhaskar, transportation coatings segment manager, Dispersions, Resins & Additives – North America, BASF;  Laura Bittle, sales and global marketing director at Borchers; Silvia Ziebold, global marketing manager industrial applications and Tobias Niederleitner, global technical segment manager BU Additives at Clariant; Thomas Polaski, field marketing manager – architectural coatings and Yujie Liu, technical service scientist at Dow Coating Materials; David Grabacki, president of keim additec surface USA; Scott Brown, global technical manager, materials performance and protection at Lonza; Rich Czarnecki, technical director at Micro Powders Inc.; Joon Choo vice president of Shamrock Technologies; and Scott VanRemortal, technical sales manager at Unimin.

CW: What types of performance enhancing additives does your company offer?

Shamrock Technologies: Shamrock Technologies offers slip additives including PTFE, waxes, wax blends, compounds, dispersions and emulsions.

CW: Given the added cost associated with these types of additives, what are the benefits to the customer?
Shamrock Technologies: Shamrock Performance Additives provide specific end properties such as slip control, mar and abrasion resistance, matting, and texturing/feel to our customers’ end products. These enable our customers to expand their product portfolio to meet their downstream needs.

CW:  What considerations should formulators make when choosing a performance enhancing additive?

Shamrock Technologies: Formulators should be focusing on the entire value proposition. More and more emphasis is now placed on the efficacy of the additive, as well as the sustainability and impact on the environment.
The June issue of Coating World published Part 1 of this Q&A. Included in the interview are: Avinash Bhaskar, Transportation Coatings Segment manager, Dispersions, Resins & Additives – North America, BASF;  Laura Bittle, sales and global marketing director at Borchers; Silvia Ziebold, global marketing industrial applications and Tobias Niderleitner, global technical segment BU, Clariant; Thomas Polaski, field marketing manager – architectural coatings and Yujie Liu, technical service scientist at Dow Coating Materials; David Grabacki, president of keim additec surface USA; Scott Brown, global technical manager, materials performance and protection at Lonza; Rich Czarnecki, technical director at Micro Powders Inc.; Joon Choo vice president of Shamrock Technologies; and Scott VanRemortal, technical sales manager at Unimin.

CW:  What are the latest technologies being developed for additives in paint and coatings?

Shamrock Technologies: Formulators have asked for easier-to-use and multifunctional products, and in many cases, pre-dispersed formulations which are stable and have a longer shelf life. Much of the new development work has been directed at fulfilling these requests.

CW: Please provide a brief description of up to two new performance enhancing additives.

Shamrock Technologies: Shamrock’s latest product, CeraSPERSE 87NS is designed to provide high COF while maintaining high gloss. It is ideal for wet non-skid. This product is perfect for non-skid applications such as interior airplane, aerospace interior walkways and high-end flooring such as automotive showrooms.
The FluoroSPERSE UV 515T is an ideal product used in flexible packaging applications where low odor, low volatility, fast curing, and low migration is desired. FluoroSPERSE UV-515T imports increased hardness, abrasion/scratch resistance, mar/scuff resistance and anti-blocking characteristics. Simple stirring is all that is needed to incorporate this pre-wetted dispersion. The PTFE in this product also contributes to a low COF and a high temperature resistance.
